A root canal treatment is required when the inside of a tooth (nerve) becomes infected and this then needs to be removed to restore your mouth to its optimum health.

Every tooth has a root which has a complex system of canals inside it. Where a tooth has become vulnerable – perhaps due to decay, a dislodged filling, or another factor, such as trauma – the nerve of the tooth can become infected.

If left untreated, this can lead to an abscess forming in the bone and ultimately the tooth may need to be removed. We will perform a root canal treatment to remove the infected nerve and clean the interior of the tooth.

This is how it is carried out:

  • Local anaesthetic is given around the tooth requiring treatment and your surrounding teeth are protected with a rubber dam while you undergo the therapy.
  • The top of your tooth is opened so we can access the infected nerve.
  • The nerve is then cleaned with a series of files and a special disinfectant.
  • Once the infection is cleared out, the canal and tooth will be filled.

You may require a crown following root canal treatment to protect the tooth. We will ensure you have all the information you need to look after your teeth following the process.
